Engaging Disengaged Young People
June 22, 2017 @ 8:45 am - 4:00 pm
Event Navigation

Working with ‘disengaged’ young people means catching their attention (in a meaningful way); and then holding it…often when you have little time and in less than ideal situations; and often with young people who seem grumpy, bored, sad or just detached. It particularly means being surprising and unexpected.
So this practical workshop will take you through strategies designed to do just this; and which are more likely to bring out the best in a person, tap into the physically active side of being young, and which leave lots of possibilities of response: a nod, a word, an action, or complete silence.
So we’ll include strategies for those who may not be good at talking and/or who are imperfect at reading and writing. We’ll include physical movement, use of image and video, drawing and writing, conversation with lots of words and conversation with lots of silence.
And as we go, we will explore the framework and evidence that support these strategies; including the impact of trauma on young people, the latest research around adolescent development and what helps young people grow well.
